Communications Manager, APAC, Energy Transition

This position may be based remotely in the U.S. or hybrid out of one of EDF’s U.S. offices.

Overall Function

The Communications Manager, Asia Pacific, Energy Transition will spearhead international and regional outreach strategies that will deploy earned, owned and paid channels as well as leading-edge stakeholder engagement tools to reach target audiences. An ideal candidate will have significant experience in global communications, exceptional writing skills, and an ability to quickly generate content for the team with limited supervision. This position will need to be able to partner and support strategy by identifying and capitalizing on messaging opportunities and crafting content on a range of issues targeted to a variety of audiences that are central to EDF’s energy transition work in the Asia Pacific (APAC).

Reporting to the Senior Communications Director, Global Methane, the Communications Manager will be responsible for guiding education and awareness strategies, developing compelling messages and content, ensuring message discipline across the region and global teams, managing outside vendors and mentoring communications staff, and providing strong performance reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute compelling and comprehensive communications plans that align with the Global Methane communications strategy and effectively advance EDF’s mission in Asia Pacific, with a focus on Japan, South Korea, China, India, Australia and ASEAN countries.
  • Analyze Asia Pacific’s global media landscape and advise on high-impact media relations strategies.
  • Ensure alignment and consistent messaging across geographies by collaborating closely with internal teams and regional staff.
  • Participate in advancing EDF organizational effectiveness and culture goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
  • Write, edit and distribute a wide range of content, including news releases, social posts, media pitches, presentations and op-eds undertight deadlines.
  • Develop and proactively pitch national and regional news stories on a systematic basis for feature coverage; and in coordination with the Senior Communications Director, Global Methane, develop storylines that adapt and elevate key issues within the methane conversation in Asia Pacific for diverse international media audiences.
  • Work with external vendors to oversee content localization efforts, ensuring effective message adaptation and resonance with local audiences across multiple languages and cultural contexts.
  • Execute press strategies, including one-on-one meetings with Asia Pacific media and opinion leaders (i.e. elected officials, appointed officials, etc.), and place bylined articles with priority outlets.
  • Monitor response to breaking news and key events to proactively identify and capitalize on communications opportunities.
  • Build and maintain a library of region-specific messaging, talking points, fact sheets, etc. and support Mission staff in strengthening communications in its campaign strategies.
  • Develop and execute communications materials designed for traditional and social media consumption.
  • Liaise with local and national environmental groups on communications approaches that elevate the methane issue, ensuring alignment with the appropriate regional advocacy director.
  • Provide expert management of communications vendors, including advertising and PR agencies, event consultants, media buyers and content partners.
  • Help to prepare program staff with training and advice for media opportunities.
  • Track results and provide real-time analytics to ensure target goals are being met.
  • Maintain Asia Pacific media contact lists and stay in regular contact with targeted reporters.
  • Track and market earned media exposure in priority Asia Pacific markets.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regional policy communications and media updates by contributing key developments to internal communications efforts.
  • Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of political campaign, PR/Ad agency, or other relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or a related field required.
  • Experience in policy, issue advocacy, or political campaign settings and corresponding track record of delivering superior campaign or advocacy communications results.
  • Experience managing external vendors and ensuring accountability across a wide range of outputs.
  • Experience developing integrated communications campaigns that leverage both traditional and digital platforms.
  • Understanding of energy and/or climate issues required, with knowledge of oil and gas strongly preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills, including strong cross-cultural communications expertise, with the ability to adapt storytelling techniques across Asia Pacific countries.
  • Understanding of the global advocacy communications landscape and the various strategies and tools necessary to reach diverse audiences in the Asia Pacific region.
  • Familiarity with legislative and regulatory processes in key Asia Pacific markets, with the ability to collaborate effectively with in-country experts and media partners to navigate regional contexts.
  • Superior media strategy skills and strategic storytelling skills, with demonstrated ability to secure high-impact media placements.
  • Track record of producing national and regional media coverage relevant to Asia Pacific audiences.
  • Experience working in coalitions and effectively coordinating communications with partner organizations is strongly preferred.
  • Proactive with excellent organizational skills, including the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks, adapt to frequent change, work well under pressure, and meet tight deadlines across different time zones.
  • Strategic judgment in public relations, media engagement, and political communications.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in one or more Asia Pacific languages (e.g., Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, etc.) is highly desirable.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to hold a flexible schedule to accommodate global time zones as needed.
