EDF Offers Support for Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro’s Actions to Address Natural Gas Impacts
Statement of EDF Senior Director Regulatory and Legislative Affairs, Jon Goldstein
(HARRISBURG, Pa.)– “Environmental Defense Fund applauds Governor Shapiro for today’s commitment to address methane emissions from oil and gas operations through speedy adoption of the soon to be finalized federal methane rules and his announcement of efforts toward better, more transparent oil and gas air pollution and chemical disclosure data. Reducing the oil and gas industry’s methane emissions is essential for the future of Pennsylvania’s climate and public health.”
Jon Goldstein, Senior Director Regulatory and Legislative Affairs, EDF
Background:
Today, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced he has instructed the Department of Environmental Protection to take immediate action to pursue formal rulemakings and policy changes, including: new requirements for the disclosure of chemicals used in drilling, improved control of methane emissions aligned with rules that are expected to be finalized this fall by the U.S. EPA and corrosion protections for gathering lines that transport natural gas. These are important steps in a comprehensive climate plan for Pennsylvania. These measures can help inform a climate action plan for the state that is also supportive of the clean energy transition that is well underway and underpinned by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.
With more than 3 million members, Environmental Defense Fund creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. To do so, EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships to turn solutions into action. edf.org
