Reports Say Trump Administration Will End Popular Energy Star Program
Statement of Ted Kelly, EDF Director and Lead Counsel of U.S. Clean Energy
“For more than three decades, the Energy Star program has helped American families shop for reliably energy-efficient home appliances that would save them money. Generations have looked for the blue Energy Star label in stores when they were buying a refrigerator or dishwasher and wanted something they could trust. Companies chose to participate in the voluntary program because they knew their customers liked it.
“Now news reports say the Trump Administration plans to end the Energy Star program, as part of its actions to dismantle our government agencies. That would limit American consumers’ choices, make simple shopping trips harder, and ultimately increase both our power bills and the amount of pollution in our air. The Energy Star program has helped Americans save more than $500 billion in energy costs and has kept approximately four billion metric tons of climate pollution out of our air since 1992. More than 1,000 companies recently wrote to EPA in support of the program. The Energy Star Program is well known and popular, and it provides significant benefits for shoppers, manufacturers, and our environment. America gains nothing, and loses a lot, by getting rid of it.”
