Texas Representatives Aim to Expand Energy Independence, Improve Economy
EDF statement from John Hall, Texas State Director, Clean Energy
(AUSTIN – March 13, 2015) Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) hailed the introduction of legislation by Senator Kirk Watson (D-Austin) and Representative Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) that will open the door for demand response in Texas and accelerate the state’s transition to a clean energy economy. Demand response is an innovative tool that rewards people for conserving electricity during times of high energy demand. This resource effectively lowers electricity bills, improves air quality, and enhances electric grid reliability, which will aid the state’s economy and provide more electric independence for Texans.
“Demand response is low-hanging fruit in Texas; it’s clean, it’s flexible, and it cost-effectively helps address the state’s rising energy needs without impacting our scarce water supply. This bill will give Texans more choices that can lower monthly electricity bills and help electric utilities better serve the needs of their customers. EDF applauds Senator Watson’s and Representative Turner’s commitment to secure cleaner energy for Texas and hopes to see the rest of the Legislature support this low-cost, water-smart technology.”
