EDF Europe: Energy Council Signals Shift to Delivery on EU Methane Regulation
BRUSSELS – Following the discussion on the EU Methane Regulation on the 15 of December Energy Council, Léa Pilsner, Policy Director at Environmental Defense Fund Europe, EU Methane, issued the following statement:
“The European Commission and Member States deserve credit for their constructive dialogue on the EU Methane Regulation. The Council is clearly focused on delivery, backing a harmonized approach outlined in the Commission’s new roadmap that provides a path forward for national authorities.
The Energy Council discussion was strengthened by the identification of practical solutions. These tools allow importers to verify methane standards without heavy administrative burdens or supply risks. Combined with a pragmatic penalty regime that protects energy security, moving decisively toward full implementation is now vital.
Concerns over energy security are increasingly out of step with market reality. New Rystad Energy analysis shows that the EU can comfortably meet its gas demand with high-standard, compliant imports several times over. Implementing the Methane Regulation now is a low-risk, high-reward step that secures both our energy independence and climate goals.”
With more than 3 million members, Environmental Defense Fund creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. To do so, EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships to turn solutions into action. edf.org
