NEW: U.S. Government’s Own Analysis Shows Repealing Tailpipe Pollution Standards Will Sharply Increase Gasoline Prices
Trump EPA Proposal Will Make Life More Expensive for Americans
New federal analysis shows EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin’s proposed repeal of the tailpipe emissions standards will sharply increase gasoline prices and dangerous pollution for the American people.
“When so many Americans are worrying about rising costs, The Trump administration’s proposed repeal of U.S. tailpipe emission standards will hit them in their pocketbooks, leading to sharp increases in gasoline prices and harmful pollution,” said Vickie Patton, Environmental Defense Fund’s general counsel. “We call on EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to immediately abandon this action before it imposes soaring costs at the pump and on the health of millions of people.”
The new analysis by the U.S. Energy Information Administration examines U.S. gasoline prices under the “Reference Case” which includes EPA’s clean vehicle standards as well as fuel economy and state standards, and the “Alternative Transportation Case” which models the repeal of those protections, now proposed by Zeldin.
The analysis shows a steady increase in the price of gasoline under the Zeldin proposal, soaring by more than 75 cents per gallon by 2050.
The analysis was published on April 15, 2025: Annual Energy Outlook 2025 - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

EDF has carried out analysis of the public health impacts of EPA’s proposed action. If finalized, EPA’s proposed repeal of the U.S. tailpipe emission standards would be associated with thousands of premature deaths, millions of lost work and school days, and billions of dollars in health costs.
With more than 3 million members, Environmental Defense Fund creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. To do so, EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships to turn solutions into action. edf.org
