May Revise Budget Shows Need for a Robust, Equitable Climate Bond
Statement of EDF California State Director Katelyn Roedner Sutter on Governor Gavin Newsom’s release of a revised budget for FY 2024-2025 to close a projected $27.6 billion deficit - May 10, 2024
“California faces a dual crisis of budgetary concerns and climate challenges that demand immediate and lasting solutions. We have standard-setting climate policies, know-how and a growing list of international alliances. But we must match these assets with investment in climate action to prevent the extreme heat, drought, wildfires and pollution harming communities across the state from getting worse. We applaud Governor Newsom for funding pioneering climate disclosure laws but urge that resources like the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund remain dedicated to climate and environmental justice priorities.
“After two rounds of climate budget cuts and delays, including disruptive mid-year cuts clawing back promised funding, it is urgent to include a robust and equitable climate bond in the final state budget agreement. Voters deserve a choice this November to help communities and natural resources most at risk. A growing number of lawmakers agree. EDF looks forward to continued collaboration with Governor Newsom and lawmakers to deliver climate solutions, including a climate bond we can proudly support on Election Day.”
