Make a gift of appreciated securities
Donating stocks, bonds or mutual funds to EDF is a powerful way to support environmental progress — and it can offer you valuable tax advantages. A gift of appreciated securities is often one of the most tax-efficient ways to give.
Here’s how it works:
- Use the secure portal above to fill out a simple form;
- Work with DonateStock, EDF and your broker to transfer and liquidate your shares; deposit the proceeds with EDF; and
- Promptly receive a receipt for your gift.
Eligibility: Shares must be publicly traded, appreciated in value, and held for at least one year to qualify.
Option 2: Make a manual stock transfer
In some cases, you may need or wish to coordinate your stock donation yourself. This includes gifts of depreciated stock, privately-held or thinly-traded stocks, and stocks you've held less than a year. In order for us to provide a proper receipt for your tax benefit, these are the steps you will need to take:
Step 1: Notify EDF
Complete our online form (at the bottom of this page) before you transfer your shares to EDF’s account at The Hollenbaugh, Rukeyser, Safro, and Williams Team, UBS Financial Services, Inc.
Step 2: Provide your broker with the transfer details
Send your broker the following stock transfer information and please ask them to provide your name with the stock transfer so we can properly acknowledge your gift.
Transfer details:
Account name: Environmental Defense Fund (Tax ID: 11-6107128)
Account number: Y1 88010
DTC number: 0221
Receiving Institution: The Hollenbaugh, Rukeyser, Safro, and Williams Team
UBS Financial Services Inc.
Step 3: Receive your acknowledgement
EDF will sell the stock and send a donor tax receipt using the contact information you provide.
Want to give anonymously? We’re happy to honor your request. Just be sure to still provide a name and contact information to ensure proper receipting.
Please note that as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization, Environmental Defense Fund cannot accept gifts made to promote or oppose particular political candidates. Those interested in political gifts might consider the work of our advocacy partner, Environmental Defense Action Fund.
EDF commits to responsible and respectful use of your information. Please see our privacy statement for full details.
