- Protecting and rebuilding wetlands, which slow down, soak up and store heavy rains
- Combining natural landscapes (like wetlands or coastal dunes) with built structures (like levees or seawalls) — so-called "hybrid" flood defenses help protect communities from flooding while supporting local wildlife
- Designing cities with flooding in mind — more green spaces and less pavement help heavy rains soak into the ground, instead of turning into flash floods
